Indian total coastal area is about 7615kms, while Gujarat alone shares longest coastal area. about 1600kms

Under the Sagarmala Programme, the Ministry is financially supporting 45 projects with a total project cost of Rs. 1900 Crore.
This will generate employment, improve infrastructure and promote ease of doing business in the country.
It is an environment-friendly mode of transportation and also promotes the public welfare.




Significance of the step

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, under the Sagarmala Programme, intends to create an ecosystem for the development of Ro-Ro (Roll-on, Roll-off) ferries and waterway transportation throughout the nation. When compared to traditional modes of transportation, this method of transportation offers a number of advantages, including shorter travel distances, cheaper logistics, and less pollution.

Aim 

  • Standardise and streamline the development and operation of ferry services
  • Promote ease of doing business by reducing delays and conflicts,
  • Boosting private players' confidence, hence expanding their involvement and encouraging healthy competition in such ventures.

Tackle the problem of pollution in ferry services.

Register in one platform multiple logistic as possible way that promote the port in e- service

Maintain and use pollution free vehicles, boats or electric vehicles etc. on sustainable energy and life principles.

All boats being utilised in ferry services must be converted either in to solar devised mode

Collaborative ferry tourism with Sri lanka if mutually beneficial without compromising security and national agenda.

Scope of Improvement area

  • The role of government agencies are inadequate as private players are engaged with their poor infrastructures since long.
  • The ferry ghats are not up to the mark, lacking with basic amenities and improper lighting arrangements which constraints the smooth flow of traffic in late hours. 
  • Another situation which makes people not to prefer ferry service is scarcity of proper connectivity with main thoroughfare and hassel free journey without interruption. 
  • Ferry service can be popularized if the same would be utilize by the persons, those are popular among the masses. 
  • Most of the canal network is passing through villeges. Hence care shall be taken so as to do not interfere agriculture activities.
  • Due to movement of vessels, canal bunds will be subjected to soil erosion,therefore revitment or lining to be done for canal.
  • Water Passage to agriculture land through sluice/ irrigation channels should not be effected.
  • Some if the Existing villages are very nearer to canal . Care shall be taken while design for public convenience.
  • Width of canals shall be as broad as possible.
  • Reduce taxes, import, exports - must subsidize it .
