The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the joint services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force are trained together before they go on to respective service academies for further pre-commissioning training. Here's an overview:

1. Establishment:

  • The NDA was established on 7 December 1954.
  • It is located in Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra, India.

2. Objective:

  • The primary aim of NDA is to provide training to cadets for all three services - the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force - before they proceed to their respective service academies.

3. Training:

  • The training at NDA is aimed at developing qualities of leadership, physical and mental toughness, and camaraderie among the cadets.
  • The training program includes academic education, physical fitness, and military training.

4. Duration of Course:

  • The duration of the course at NDA is three years.
  • Cadets join the NDA after completing their 10+2 education.

5. Curriculum:

  • The curriculum at NDA includes subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, English, and other social sciences.
  • In addition to academics, the cadets undergo rigorous physical training, drills, and various military exercises.

6. Commissioning:

  • Cadets who successfully complete the training at NDA are awarded degrees from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and are then sent to respective service academies for further training.
  • On completion of the training at the respective service academies, cadets are commissioned as officers in the Indian Armed Forces.

7. Joint Training:

  • NDA is one of the very few military academies in the world where cadets from all three services train together.

8. Selection Process:

  • The selection process for NDA includes a written examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), followed by an interview by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

  • The NDA campus is spread over 7,015 acres of land, and it has state-of-the-art facilities for training.
