The National Population Register (NPR) is a database of the identities of all Indian residents. The data for the creation of the NPR was collected during the General Census carried out between April and September 2010. The database is maintained by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India.

The census is legally backed by the Census Act, 1948. The NPR is a mechanism outlined in a set of rules framed under the Citizenship Act, 1955.

What details are required for NPR?

Name of person.
Relationship to head of household.
Father's name.
Mother's name.
Spouse's name (if married)
Sex.
Date of Birth.
Marital status.

It is compulsory for every usual resident of India to register in the NPR. This includes both Indian citizens as well as a foreign citizen. The objective of the NPR is to create a database of every usual resident in the country.

Is NPR proof of citizenship?

National Population Register is a database of people living in India, citizens or not, but National Resgiter of Citizens is a database of Indian citizens. The NRC process demands proof of citizenship from the respondents. ... But in NPR, there is no need to provide any document.

Who maintains NRC?
Central government may maintain a “National Register of Indian Citizens”. The Registrar General India shall act as the “National Registration Authority” (and will function as the Registrar General of Citizen Registration). Incidentally, the Registrar General is also the country's Census Commissioner.
